FAQs

Should I hire a building designer or draftsman or an architect?

If you have a small project such as a renovation or extension of a residential dwelling or a new residential construction, a draftsman or building designer can be more realistic in working within construction budgets.

If you are looking to build a home taller than three storeys, then an architect is required.

Can building designers and a draftsman create complex custom designs?

Yes, building designers and drafters are detailed workers and can customise the design to suit your vision.

How can I design my house to avoid construction budget blowouts?

Communicate your budget clearly with your building designer and there are ways to avoid construction budget blowouts.

At Acacia Building Designs, we work with our clients to produce preliminary plans so that they can involve builders throughout the process before we finalise our designs for council submission. Our head designer Tim is also a licensed builder by trade and can give insight to the most functional ways to build your design.

I'm a developer, can I still use a building designer or draftsman?

Yes, we can provide drawings for buildings under three storey such as new construction, duplexes, townhouses, NDIS housing and much more.

Is there a difference in cost between an architect and a building designer?

An architect typically charges a lot more for designs. Building designers and a draftsman are usually more affordable.

Can a building designer or draftsman provide a schedule of finishes?

Yes, it is required on the final plans to provide indications of exterior finishes. If you're looking for a detailed schedule of exterior finishes, we can provide that for you in additional to your drawings.

Does a building designer provide interior design?

Not usually, however we have an interior designer on board who can help you with the interior finishes of the home. A schedule of finishes will be provided as part of this service.
